Build the structure with real headings
Use Heading 1 through Heading 6 to describe the structure of the document. Avoid making ordinary paragraphs look like headings with bold text and spacing alone.
Real headings power Outline navigation and can feed the table of contents in a PDF. A clean hierarchy also makes a long document easier to scan and reorganise.
Move around with Outline
Open Writing Tools › Outline to see the document headings together. Choose a heading to move directly to that part of the document.
Outline is especially useful when scrolling from memory stops being reliable. It also gives you a quick check for missing or badly ordered headings.
Link to another heading in the same document
A link can point to a heading in the current document as well as to a website. Internal links are useful in reports, manuals and reference material where readers may need to jump between sections.
Give headings meaningful names. If you make major structural changes later, include important internal links in your final check.
Use Find for repeated terms and large changes
Find and replace lets you move through matches with context before changing them. Match case and Whole word help narrow the results.
For a terminology change across a large manuscript, replace one match first. Use Replace all only after you are sure the search is specific enough.
Keep research, feedback and recovery with the document
Shelf keeps project notes nearby. Citations keep source information with the document. Review keeps human feedback attached to selected text, and Versions gives you recovery points as the draft changes.
You can use these tools without splitting the document into separate files just to keep the surrounding work organised.
Add page structure without editing on fake paper
The editor stays continuous. Page Breaks, Section Breaks and Column Breaks tell Compose how the finished document should be laid out without simulating paper pages while you write.
Use the PDF preview when you need to judge actual pagination, columns or where a section begins.
Finish as PDF or continue in Word
PDF can build a table of contents from headings and apply covers, running elements, sections and page numbers. DOCX keeps substantial document structure editable for continued work in Microsoft Word.
