Insert an image
Choose Insert image and select a PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP file. The input file can be up to 6 MiB.
Compose may show a smaller version while you edit, while keeping the original local image available for higher-quality PDF, DOCX or ODT output.
Choose Small, Medium or Large
Image size uses three presets based on the document width: Small is 50%, Medium is 75%, and Large uses the full available width.
These presets keep image behaviour predictable. Compose does not use freeform drag handles for arbitrary image sizing.
Align the image
Choose left, centre or right alignment. Alignment controls where the image sits within the available document width; it is not free-floating page positioning.
For precise printed page composition, check the result in PDF preview rather than trying to position the image by eye in the continuous editor.
Write useful alt text
Alt text describes the image for someone who cannot see it. Compose requires alt text when you apply image edits.
Describe the information the image contributes in this document. Do not begin every description with “Image of” unless that wording adds useful meaning.
If the image contains important text, include its meaning when relevant. Do not expect the reader to recover essential information from the picture alone.
Add a caption or credit when it helps
A caption can explain what the reader should notice. Credit or source text can record where an image came from. Both are optional and serve a different purpose from alt text.
If the image is decorative, reconsider whether it needs to be in a document whose images are meant to communicate information.
Keep image quality when you export
When the original local image is available, Compose can use it for PDF, DOCX and ODT instead of the smaller editing copy.
Images linked from a web address are different. They may need a connection during PDF preparation, and Compose can retrieve one through its image service if the browser blocks direct access.
